The Pope's Lenten Message
Each Lent, the Bishop of Rome offers a reflection to the universal Church at the onset of the forty days of Lent.  This year, Pope Benedict XVI reflects on the great theme of the justice that Christ brought through his death and resurrection.

USCCB Lenten Resources
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has produced a webpage of Lenten resources, including a link to the papal message detailed above, and information on what we believe and how we pray as Catholic Christians during this holy season of preparation for Easter.

Lenten Calendar
Make each day of Lent a transformative experience by putting faith into action!  This feature from AmericanCatholic.org includes a Lenten calendar, activities, readings and reflections updated daily throughout Lent, from Ash Wednesday through Holy Week and Good Friday. Click Seasonal Features > Lent to access these resources. Click here for CCUP's Lenten calendar.

Contemplative Practices
Contemplative practices facilitate and deepen our relationship with God.  They are an opportunity to invite the Indwelling Presence into everything we do.  Contemplative practices such as Centering Prayer and Lectio Divina,  give us the eyes to see and the ears to hear God calling us to the banquet.

Eucharistic Adoration
Eucharistic Adoration is time spent before the Blessed Sacrament to be still, hear the voice of Jesus calling to us, and grow in appreciation of the Eucharist which we celebrate as the People of God at every Mass.

While one may spend time in private prayer with the Lord by visiting the Blessed Sacrament Chapel anytime the CCUP facility is accessible, there will be two opportunities during Lent for communal prayer during Eucharistic Adoration at 7:00 p.m. in the Daily Chapel on February 24th, March 3rd, March 17th and March 31st.  Please contact Mary Lynn Delfino or Kristina Vogel for more information.

Liturgy of the Hours
The Liturgy of the Hours is a prayer offered throughout the day, linked to the seasons of the Year of Grace.  It is built on the psalms and challenges us to make every moment of everyday holy.

The Rosary

The purpose of the Rosary is to help keep in memory certain principal events or mysteries in the history of our salvation, and to thank and praise God for them. There are twenty mysteries reflected upon in the Rosary, and these are divided into the five Joyful Mysteries, the five Luminous Mysteries, the five Sorrowful Mysteries, and the five Glorious Mysteries.

Stations of the Cross
These devotions find their roots in the experiences of the earliest pilgrims to Jerusalem, who would walk the “Via Dolorosa” as it had been reconstructed there.  During the Middle Ages, however, it became impossible for pilgrims to make this journey, and a “spiritual” Way of the Cross became increasingly popular.

All are welcome to walk the Stations of the Cross set in the floor around the ambulatory of the church from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every Friday during Lent (with the exception of Friday, March 12th).  A communal celebration of the Stations will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the church each week, and a simple meal of soup and bread will be available following the communal celebration in the Meeting Room.

Sacrament of Reconciliation
There will be a communal penance service with individual confessions and absolution on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. in the Church. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available anytime by appointment. Contact Fr. Bacik to make an appointment.
Fasting
Lenten Abstinence and Fasting
Catholic Christians age 14 and older are called to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday (February 17, 2010), the Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday (April 2, 2010).

Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are called to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday unless it poses a health risk.  Those who are able to observe the fast of these two days should eat one full meal and two lighter meals that do not exceed the size of the full meal.

Additional Suggestions...

  • Abstain from eating a type of food or drink you know is bad for you.
  • Include exercise in your daily routine.
  • Fast from behaviors that are harmful to you.
  • Fast for one meal a week and give the money you saved to the poor.
  • Fast from watching TV, computer or video games, and use the time you save for prayer or study.

Almsgiving
Lenten Care Bags
Beginning on Ash Wednesday, bags will be available in the Gathering Space to be taken and filled with non-perishable items.  Please return the bags to the DeBenedetti Room no later than Palm Sunday (April 5th).
